Hari Prasad Paudyal was born in Baglung, in western Nepal, a rich repository of Nepali folk music traditions. In his hometown, he learned to play traditional musical instruments at a very early age. When he was 10, he was sent to Varanasi, India, to study at a residential “gurukul” system school. He spent 6 years there learning Veda chanting and Sanskrit.
Hari is an award winning bansuri performer, with a Master’s degree in Music, working on a doctoral degree in Music Under the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) fellow at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi, India. He studied bansuri under virtuoso Shri Vinod Prasanna, and flute under Dr. Pralhad Nath at BHU. He has toured Europe (Switzerland, France and Belgium) and Asia and has played at numerous music programs around India and Nepal like “Kashi Sangeet Sabha” Varanasi, “Pt. Madanmohan Malaviya Aluminimet” Varanasi, “University Of Wisconsin Study Abroad, American Institute Of Indian Study” Varanas, “Kala Prakash” Varanasi, “Sangeet Natak Acedmy” Delhi, “Indira Gandhi Kala Kendra” such as the renowned Dhrupad Mela in Varanasi. He counts renowned sitarist Pandit Rabindra Narayan Goswami as his mentor and guru. He also apprenticed with Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasiya at his gurukul in Orissa.
